Anglais - Souvereign of the Seas

The Sovereign of the Seas, built from 1635 to 1637 for King Charles I of England, is one of the most unusual sailing ships of the 17th century.

This ship became famous for her magnificent artistic design, which made this royal ship a symbol of sovereign power. Her numerous sculptures and ornamented details were not simply decoration, but fulfilled a complex iconographical programme, which served both the goal of elementary representation and resulted in a wonderful complete work of art.

The ship fought in many naval battles and was completely destroyed in 1703 following a fire that broke out after a candle was tipped over.
